A book that signs — a child scans a QR code and instantly sees the sign in Polish Sign Language

Coblit built the Odważni Migają app for Towarzystwo GEST: a child scans a QR code in the book and watches a video in Polish Sign Language (PJM).

Towarzystwo GEST (Odważni.org) — a Coblit project

About the project

Towarzystwo GEST (Odważni.org)

We built a mobile app that links the book with videos: the child points the phone camera at a QR code in the book and instantly watches the chosen word or sign in Polish Sign Language. The book also hides special signs that the child tracks down like a detective and collects in the app.

The outcome at a glance

  • Every QR code in the book opens a video in PJM
  • Children discover new signs through play
  • Parents and carers learn PJM together with their children
  • App published on the App Store (16 October 2026)

Project journey

From challenge to success

Problem

The book “Odważni Migają” (“The Brave Ones Sign”) teaches children Polish Sign Language, but a sign is a movement — on paper you can only show a drawing. A parent who doesn't know PJM can't always show the child what the sign really looks like.

  • A sign is a movement, but the book only shows a drawing
  • Parents and carers often don't know PJM
  • Learning from the book alone quickly stops being fun for a child

Cost of the problem

Every day without a solution meant more manual work, slower service and missed opportunities.

  • The child learns the sign from a drawing, without the movement
  • Less chance that the family will sign together
  • Less engagement in learning

Solution

We built a mobile app that links the book with videos: the child points the phone camera at a QR code in the book and instantly watches the chosen word or sign in Polish Sign Language. The book also hides special signs that the child tracks down like a detective and collects in the app.

  • QR code scanner for the book
  • Videos of words and signs in Polish Sign Language (PJM)
  • Hidden signs in the book — a detective game
  • A collection of discovered signs
  • Learning for children, parents and carers together
  • Free app on the App Store

Business results

The book “Odważni Migają” has gained an interactive companion: reading turns into an adventure, and every sign can be seen in motion.

  • Every QR code in the book opens a video in PJM
  • Children discover new signs through play
  • Parents and carers learn PJM together with their children
  • App published on the App Store (16 October 2026)

Who it’s for

Who this kind of solution helps most

We see similar challenges in many companies. If you recognise yourself in this list, this project shows what we can do for you too.

  • Children's book publishers
  • Educational and social projects
  • Foundations and associations
  • Schools and nurseries
  • Organisations working for accessibility
  • Creators of educational materials with video elements

Why it works

5 reasons why this solution works

I want a similar solution
  1. Book and video in a single gesture

Just scan the QR code to see the sign in motion, without searching for materials online.

  2. A detective game

The signs hidden in the book encourage the child to come back to reading and look for more.

  3. Learning for the whole family

A parent who doesn't know PJM learns together with the child from the same videos.

  4. Simple for a child to use

One scanner and the video plays straight away, with no accounts or settings.

  5. Accessibility in practice

The app brings Polish Sign Language closer to hearing and deaf children alike, in line with the mission of the Odważni project.

How we ran the project

From analysis to ongoing development — one partner at every stage

This is how we worked together on the Towarzystwo GEST (Odważni.org) project: from understanding the processes, through wireframes and architecture, to rollout and further development.

  1. Analysis and workshops with the client’s team

We talk to the people who will use the system. We map out how processes work today, where time and money are being lost, and how they should work a year from now, once the company has grown.

    In this project
    • Together with Towarzystwo GEST, we defined how the book and the PJM videos should complement each other
    What you gain

We build what solves a real problem — not a list of features nobody will use.

  2. UX/UI mock-ups and prototype

We design screens and user journeys in Figma and test a clickable prototype with future users before the first line of code is written.

    In this project
    • We designed a simple flow for a child: scan the QR code and the video plays straight away
    What you gain

You see and test the solution at the outset — changes to a mock-up cost a fraction of changes to a finished system. You can order the analysis and mock-ups as a separate stage.

  3. Technology selection and architecture

We choose technologies to match the goal, the budget and the systems already running in the company. We design the architecture, integrations and data security so that the system can grow together with the business.

    Technologies in this project
    • React Native
    • TypeScript
    • Expo
    • Redux
    • React Native Reanimated
    • SQLite
    • Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
    What you gain

No costly rework a year later — the system is ready for more users, more data and new features.

  4. Building in stages

We work in short stages and show a working version every few weeks. We launch the features that deliver the biggest savings first.

    In this project
    • QR code scanner, PJM video playback, hidden signs and a collection of discovered signs
    What you gain

You have constant visibility of progress, a say in the direction and see the first results sooner.

  5. Testing, deployment and training

We test the system, migrate the data, launch it in the production environment and train the team in day-to-day use.

    In this project
    • App published on the App Store on 16 October 2026
    What you gain

A smooth start without downtime — from day one the team knows how to work in the new system.

  6. Support and development after launch (SLA)

After launch we monitor operation, respond to tickets under the SLA and extend the system with further features and automations.

    In this project
    • The app grows along with the books and materials of the Odważni project
    What you gain

One partner from idea to ongoing development — you are never left alone with the system.
