Private AI model or ChatGPT? Which to choose for your business
A private AI model is the right choice when AI is to work on confidential data — about customers, patients or candidates, contracts or company know-how. It runs on the company’s servers or in an isolated cloud in the EU, doesn’t pass data to public models and doesn’t require paying for every query in tokens. ChatGPT is enough for general tasks on data that can leave the company.
The key difference: where the data goes
Public AI tools run on the provider’s servers. When an employee pastes a contract, customer data or an internal document into them, the information leaves the company. A private AI model runs on the company’s servers or in an isolated cloud in the EU — with access control and usage logs.
Comparison
| ChatGPT and other public AI | Private AI model | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Provider’s servers | Company servers or EU cloud |
| Company data | Leaves the company | Stays in the company |
| Knowledge of the company | Only what you paste in | Company documents, procedures and systems |
| Costs | Subscription or tokens for every use | Predictable, without billing every query |
| Integrations | Limited | With CRM, ERP, HR and industry systems |
| Best for | General tasks and texts | Company processes on confidential data |
When to choose a private model?
- you process personal data — of customers, patients, candidates (GDPR),
- you work with trade secrets or client documents,
- you operate in a regulated industry — healthcare, finance, law, the public sector,
- you want AI to learn from your data and reflect your company’s decisions.
Example: a dedicated model for tenders
For an international pharmaceutical company we built an AI model trained exclusively on the client’s data — its history of tenders and bids. As a result, the assessment of tender fit reflects the company’s real decisions rather than generic rules — and work that used to require more than 10 people is now done by 3.
